Is it legal to have a camera that can pick up cars licenses plates that drive by in front of your house? In California ?

Someone recently shot at my house and my neighbors so I’m trying to step up protective measures. Aside from moving what do you suggest?

    It's legal to take pictures anywhere in public.

    Yes, it's legal.  Doorbell cams accomplish this purpose and the stated purpose is to watch the front of your house.  Win/win.
