Can I insure a vehicle that is not in my name yet?
I have been left a vehicle by my grandfather who has recently passed away. May he rest in peace. I would like to quickly start using the vehicle so that I can get my brother my other car. It will be approximately 3 months until we can legally put the car in my name. The car doesn't have any insurance right now. My aunt won't let me drive the vehicle yet because he's afraid if I crash it, then my grandpa's assets could be sued. Is there a way that I can insure the car to prevent that?

Aunt is proving to be smarter than you. She knows what is going on so you GOT TO WAIT THE 3 MONTHS. You can put storage insurance on it as part of the ESTATE(meaning you can't drive it but it is protected from being stolen for say $50/yr then when the car is finally released to you, the storage insurance is flipped over to driving insurance in YOUR name - that is some fancy paper flipping at the insurance office and it is done.
. More hassle than it is worth.

No, it's not your car and the owner is DEAD. Your aunt is smart not to let you drive the car.

CALL a couple of insurance co's. You may be able to get liability insurance (to protect you gramp's estate) but not comp / collision yet because legally you won't lose anything if someone else's car is stolen or wrecked. CALL

My insurance says I am covered on a newly acquired car for so long...5-10 days? As part of my policy but not after that. I assume its tied up in probate or it would not take that long. Im afraid there is no way to be covered for 3 months while you wait.
Feel free to ask an insurance company but I am 99% sure you would not be covered even if they sold it to you without a proper tag in your name.
Now, if the tag is still good, its a good question for your insurance company. I think you would not be covered as you did not have permission from the owner.

You cannot insure a vehicle that you do not own or have an "Insurable interest" in.
Why do you say that you cannot "legally" put the car in your name yet?
Anybody, of any age, with or without a drivers license may have a car titled in their name.

you can buy insurance in the name of the grandfather and add your name as an additional insured.

In my state it's up to each individual insurance company if they permit that or not. You failed to mention what state you live in.....
Call around and ask insurance agents.

How stupid can you get? Should you ask anonymous idiots on Yahoo!Answers -- or should you go to https://www.geico.com/ or https://www.progressive.com/ or whatever company you want and ASK THEM!

My take is that even if you're allowed to insure the car, your uncle's estate is still the registered owner and the estate could be sued.

You cannot legally insure the car until you are named on the title.
Do it illegally and if found out you lose your money and the insurance gets canceled. The insurer then regards you as having committed insurance fraud and shares that information on a database used by ALL other insurers. You’ll then find it very difficult to obtain normal insurance at any price for many years.
Be patient. Just wait three months.
