Is grey a shade of black?

Technically, black is a shade of gray.  The gray scale goes from solid black to solid white and covers everything in between.  Black is just the darkest gray, and white is the lightest gray.

Technically it's a tint of black. White is typically added to black to make the color grey. 

A shade makes colors darker. A tint means you're adding white, or making the color lighter.
