It depends on what toe. If it is your big toe, it could be ingrown or you may have a fungal infection caused by inhaling clorox bleach fumes. Age is also a factor. There are so many possibilites.

Usually it is because of stress or circulation problem, e.g.1st(big) toe is connected with liver and spleen meridians, the 5th(smallest) toe, gallbladder meridian. acupuncture is very effective! Even only acupressure or self acupressure on the corresponding finger on your hand is helpful immediately.
