Hm, but actual number of pins on the sprockets remains the same.

No, with identical sprockets they are essentially the same. There may be a slight increase in friction if an Idler sprocket is required because of the length but it is probably not enough to impact the system.

Yes cause more links means more pins which creates more points of friction that take useful work out of the system.
