Weighted different?  All votes count the same.  It's about the Electoral College, not the popular vote.

But here's what I don't understand.  Why are SO MANY "Brits" on Yahoo Q/A asking about politics?  Quite honestly I couldn't care LESS what "your" Queen and her family of clowns is doing.

What exactly is your point here?  Everyone who votes for the guy who loses doesn't get what they voted for.  This isn't any different in Europe than it is in America or anywhere else for that matter.

the USA was founded on the notion that the People were the government and that the People expressed themselves politically in the same way as they organized their communities.....with the individual at the core, the family next, then the community, the county and the state....

we have the popular vote where it counts....Congress....which by design is the most powerful branch of government (as it controls the budget and holds the power to appoint or remove the heads of the other branches via the impeachment/appointment process).

the federal government as a whole is the government of the states collectively....just as we have laws and tradition to empower minority peoples, we also have standards in place to ensure that minority states still have a voice.

Now, those two are often the same thing, Just like the winner of the Popular vote is usually also the winner of the electoral college.

In 2016, Hillary won the popular vote in California by a little more than Three Million votes. Hillary got all 59 of California's electoral votes. If shehad won by ONE vote she srill would have gotten all 59. Bet you'd think THAT is fair!

But it really goes to Federalism. We are the United STATES of America. We do not have ANY National elections. We have 51 separate state elections, with DC counting as a state.

The TRUTH is the only reason you don't like the E/C is the last two times it's result was different than the pop vote, the Democrats lost. If it had gone the other way, we would not be hearing a PEEP out of you.

Pretty much Republicans like to categorize votes by state. In reality ain’t no such thing as voting state by state only just Americans Voting. That’s why republicans like the electorals because they ignore all of the Americans 

No you didn’t understand it incorrectly. That’s exactly how it works. And it will never change because changing the voting system requires a 2/3 majority that will never happen.

A handful of swing states decide the election. The rest of the country’s votes are immaterial...
