Why do we still get sick from the common cold?

If we recovered the first time from the cold, why do we still get ill from it? I imagine that the immunity and proteins don't last very long, but I'm wondering why we cannot create immunity/ proteins that last longer.

The disease called the “common cold” is really about 200 different diseases. Immunity to one virus usually does not help Much in fighting off the others.
