Take 1 solar mass uniformly distributed in a sphere 10^3 AU, estimate its gravitational potential energy (GM/r).  Now consider that same mass in a sphere the radius of the Sun.  What's the difference in potential energy?  If that change happens over 40 million years, what is that power in solar luminosities?
