We have had long conversations about what we will do when the "other half" dies. Somebody's got to go first, in all likelihood.

We've got financial stuff set up so the other person could continue to live here without much change in the way they live. We agree that we would have to commit ourselves to activities outside the house, because it would be too easy to be hermits. We caution against romances that move too fast, because some people want money and will fake affection or love to get it. We agree that it's okay to be alone romantically, but it's also okay to love again if it happens, because what we really want is for the surviving spouse to be happy.

What would absolutely gut me is losing a child.
