 Do people believe that care for the Developmentally Disabled needs to be re -evaluated?

    It really depends on what you mean by that. Autistic people are babied too much. Most aspies aren't mentally retarded and don't need special treatment. What they do need is to take interest in socializing and not get tunnel vision when it comes to their hobbies and interests. People with Down Syndrome, even high functioning people, are severely impaired and will probably need some kind of caregiver for the rest of their lives. It's important that they find a job that they can handle, because the help they need to function is expensive, even with family and/or government assistance. You're talking about a wide range of conditions, from made up ailments like ADD, to severe mental retardation. Not all of these people even need help, and some need help 24/7.

    To achieve what?!!! If someone is DD, they are like that for life. No matter what we do for them. Any development that we achieve works for some and not for others. People, including handicapped people, are individuals that respond differently to things.

    There is no one size fits all.
