The world famous race is The Melbourne cup. Old Rowley was the name of a stallion racehorse belonging to King Charles II (1660-1685) of England. The Rowley Mile at Newmarket, Suffolk is named after the nickname of King Charles II, Old Rowley. Old Rowley was his favorite horse.

Old Rowley won at 100/1. It paid the mortgage and set the soldier settler up for life. A crowd of 90,000 went to the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in 1940 described as one of the most remarkable because it was won by the outsider, Old Rowley, who hadn't been successful since 1938.
