I'm not going till Dec but I'm going to Chicago ?
For work function here. I live in CT what do i have to do before I fly out there. I know it's early to say what's going to happen here in the next few months before Dec.

check airlines if they have covid cancellation policies. either if you get your full refund back, back in miles, etc. if it gets worse this winter like some people will think, you may not end up going.
do a map / radius check on where the event is and where you can stay. if you're doing all the booking your self. figure out what hotels are still open, etc.
and check the work function too every week. they may just cancel all together if cases get worse in the city and things get more shut down or go to partial lock down again like in march / april.

The weather will be similar to CT at that time of the year; but with COVID becoming worse, it is likely that even the most popular attractions, restaurants, etc. will be drastically shut down.
I can't tell you any more because your question is very vague. Also, SPECIFICALLY where will you be staying in Chicago?
