When did carpeting become common in public buildings?
The photograph was taken and the public library in Park Ridge Il. in 1958 when it first opened and it's still at the same location though was added on 19 years later and has carpeting. I remember before it was build on but was surprised to find looking at another picture of this not seeing carpeting because if someone coughs or drops something the sound is sure to echo which isn't good for libraries.

I remember before the addition was built in 77 but can't remember if the library had carpeting before though I seem to remember going on the 3rd fl. balcony and not seeing any so they probably had none till the addition.
Thanks for the help.

I looked at Google image searches for 'public library 1950' and then 1960, '70, and '80. It wasn't until I got to the 1980 search that I started to see mainly carpet as the floor covering. I'm guessing that tile flooring was used earlier because it was easier to clean. Cost of installation may have been lower as well.
