Why doesn't Puerto Rico declare independence?

    Why should it. It can leech off the US. Without US support, it would be in deep trouble. Over 43% of the people are below the poverty line. It still haven’t recovered

     from hurricane Maria. It gets hit by hurricanes every hurricane season.

    DP gave a correct answer -- though it was in very dismissive and confrontational terms. PR has very little chance of being economically successful if it was independent. It would incur enormous extra expenses of administration and defense that are borne by the US Federal government.
