Points are used to reach the next user level. Each level has a limit of the # of questions and answers an account can post daily. By gaining points and reaching the next user level (up to Level 4) the user may post more questions/answers each YA day. There is no benefit beyond reaching Level 4 anymore (that level is the max # of questions/answers any account may post daily).

Today, the sole purpose of points is to reach the next level, with the maximum level being 7.  Leveling up also allows you to answer and ask more questions everyday. 

The only use of points is to increase levels to increase the number of questions and answers you can make.  Otherwise, they are worthless.
