In the movie "Rebel Without a Cause", why can't James Dean get along with his parents ?

Because his parents are always bickering with each other and his mother always gets her way. His father is too weak and his mother too bossy. He wants some support from his father, some wisdom or guidance, but it doesn't happen.
He is a rebel because his parents are not providing the guidance and stability he needs, not because there is really anything to rebel against.
In the end his father promises to be stronger and he is reconciled with his parents.
This movie is kind of old, but I was struck by the fact that the father is always wearing a ruffly woman's apron, whereas ever since I can remember, more masculine or neutral styles are readily available. The implication seems to be that the father is playing the wife's role in the marriage. I'm sure there have been bossy wives and weak husbands throughout history, and it doesn't have to show up in the clothing.
