Which vehicle should I get?

So I'm looking for a vehicle. I have about $5,300 to spend. I have little knowledge about cars, but my mechanic said that if I find something I like, bring it to him so he could check it out to make certain there are no problems underneath before I buy it.

I found 2 vehicles that I am trying to decide. One is a 2005 white Chevrolet small SUV. I forget what kind it is because I've looked at so many vehicles the last few months, but I'm pretty sure it's an equinox. It has around 170,000 miles. The second vehicle is a 2006 silver Buick Lucerne CXS and it has 116,000 miles.

The Chevy is from a car lot and is $3,000 and the Buick is from a seller on Facebook and is $5,000. I know the Buick has less miles, but what is leaving me confused on which one is because I really wanted an SUV. The last car I had (Ford Taurus), I was always getting leg cramps because of how little of leg room there was and I'm not even that tall (I'm 5'8")!

So which vehicle would you recommend?

Update:

My cramps weren't from something else. I had literally no room to move my legs which is why they would cramp up. I would have to put my legs on the dashboard to get any relief. I should mention this is when traveling out of town. Obviously, my legs aren't going to cramp during a 10 minute car ride, but an hour in the same position starts to hurt. I might only be 5'8" but I have very long legs!

Update 2:

My Ford Taurus was an older model. The driver's seat was fine and had plenty of leg room, but the passenger seat (which is where I typically sit) didn't. I always had the seat as far back as it would go. Granted, the car was not in the best shape when I got it since I only paid $1,000 for it so there is a possibility that it didn't go back all the way.

Update 3:

I'm only able to find vehicles that are in my small hometown. I currently have a vehicle that breaks down every time you take it out of town, no matter if you fix it something else goes wrong. Plus, I'm wanting to stay in town so my mechanic can check the vehicle out. I've been looking for a vehicle for over a month and the 2 that I mentioned are the ones in the best shape physically. I have yet to see a Kia.

Well, I'm 6'2" and I had two Tauruses, one after the other, a 1990 wagon and then a 1998 wagon, and I found the legroom as a driver to be just fine.

In your budget range, forget SUVs. They're all unsafe junk, and lose value like crazy.

You need to keep looking because just because a vehicle is large on the outside, that's not a guarantee that it's large on the inside.

I do have one recommendation for you, but you may have to hunt a bit more than usual.

I currently drive a 2009 Kia Rondo, which though it looks at bit crossover SUVish, it's built on a car platform. It has the most legroom in any car I've ever had, it's amazingly comfortable to drive and to sit in, the sightlines from the driver's seat are beyond excellent, and it gets good fuel economy, both highway and city.

Now, Kia reskinned it in 2013, and I prefer the 2007-2012 design, and one of that vintage should fall into your price range. Also, I've had this car for almost nine years now, and it has been very, very reliable and I've done many multi day very long haul drives in it, from Ottawa, Canada to Tampa FL, and out to Spokane, WA.

taurus has plenty of legroom. So your cramps were from something else.  Neither are great choices.  Look for Toyota, Honda or Mazda.

I am 6-6 and I was a low end car dealer for a dozen years. ONLY car I had an issue with was a Tempo where the seat was stuck in the UP position and it would not go back. Sold it to a short mexican guy.

Nearly all cars had enough leg room for me.  Do you know how to adjust the seat?

I looked up a 2008. Front Leg Room (in.): 41.3.

I have 36 inch legs. I guarantee you that your legs are a lot shorter than mine and not more than 41 inches.

Stay away from private sellers in internet sites.  Too many scammers.  And you have no protection if something goes wrong.  I personally would not buy any vehicle with more than 50,000 miles on it.
