How can I get a car I bought from a private seller in VA to my home state NJ?
There is no Information in the NJ MVC website about in transit tags for this sort of thing. NJ MVC is appt only, which could be up to a month. The only option i see is buy the car drive 4 hours back, make appt. Transfer title. Drive back weeks later?

Look in the telephone BOOK Not in the yellow pages but in the center (mine are the blue pages) These are government offices. Try to find the Ministry of Transportation in NJ(as they all operate the same way so the info will be the same) or Commercial Weigh scales...as they would know who to connect you to
Commercial Truck drivers are usually taking trailers into other states and the trailer has to be insured for the one way trip.
. This is a Point A to Point B license/insurance.(no sight seeing trips). Can't go see Uncle Billy. You are doing the CANNON-BALL RUN. Am pretty sure you can buy the stuff at your states office to make that run. You know the route. Point A & Point B. Besides you can find the office in your town, maybe hit a weekend in the other, when government offices are closed is not good.
You will get a transfer decal you must attach to the rear window of your vehicle. It is your temporary plate & insurance.
. As you physically have to get that stuff, no need for it to be on line. You are buying a License plate for the vehicle and insurance for the vehicle. Wear a mask BATMAN, so there is no issues there...because government servants are FRONT LINE WORKERS. They do not want to get sick....but goods must still travel on the roads... so they have to be there to do their jobs.
Think for a second. Time is up. If you got to drive back a second time, then your car stays there OR YOU REMEMBER TO BRING SOMEONE WHO CAN DRIVE YOU OLD CAR BACK. So you R buying a lot of gas.
Or you can stop at a truck yard and ask what it would cost to get your car flat bedded back. They stick it on a flatbed with other goods going to your state and it is transported back. Or a tow truck company there or a train station there. Might as well call the airport too and ocean going ships and get all the figures. Time table too. "When pigs fly" means - will take awhile.

Just have it towed. Or arrange to leave it there until you get the temp tags.

I usually just throw insurance on it and drive it home. With the title signed and dated in the passenger seat in case I get pulled over... But have only done short hour or so runs home.

Maybe you can ask VA if you can get some sort of temporary or transit tag from VA to use until you get ones from NJ.

Have it shipped to NJ and go to the NJ DMV with the title and registration and bill of sale. Or just drive it to NJ.
