I wouldn't say alcoholic but he seems to depend on booze to relax. Long term daily consumption is playing with fire. Genetics play a role in alcoholism and time will tell. 

Alcoholism needs to be treated when drinking alcohol interferes with one's personal and/or professional life. There is also a condition, talked about by recovering alcoholics as alcoholic thinking. I believe it involves magical thinking and lapses from reality, but cannot correlate it to a diagnosis. According to the Mayo Clinic:

Alcoholism is the inability to control drinking due to both a physical and emotional dependence on alcohol.

Symptoms include a strong need or urge to use alcohol. Those with alcohol use disorder may have problems controlling their drinking, continue to use alcohol even when it causes problems, or have withdrawal symptoms when they rapidly decrease or stop drinking.

Treatment involves counseling, such as behavioral therapy, and medications that reduce the desire to drink. Some people need medical detoxification to stop drinking safely. Mutual support groups help people stop drinking, manage relapses and cope with necessary lifestyle changes.

No, he wouldn't be considered an alcoholic because he drinks almost every night. Being an “alcoholic” doesn't have anything to do with how much or how often a person drinks. Some alcoholics never drink.

No, I wouldn't. Not even close. A man who has two drinks most days of the week is a moderate drinker, within an acceptable range in terms of health risk or almost any other objective measure you care to name.

Most people don't seem to understand what alcoholism is. I suggest googling it so you know and understand why your boyfriend's drinking habits don't seem to be those of an alcoholic. How often a person drinks really has nothing to do with it. Some alcoholics only drink every few months. Some drink once a week. Some drink every day. The key indicator is that they have little or no control over how much they drink. A man who has two drinks and only two drinks on a regular basis seems to me to have things well under control.

Not an alcoholic, and on the edge of being unhealthy (physically) but not over the edge - as long as he keeps it in check I wouldn't worry about it. 

Two drinks a day is at the upper end of the recommended limit for adult males, but still within the limit.

If he gets a bad cold or has dental surgery and is still drinking on those days, or if you notice him drinking more if he's stressed or can't sleep or because he's bored, those are red flags that he may be on the road to alcohol dependence.   

Does his family have a history of alcohol abuse?   Some people are genetically predisposed while others can drink two drinks a day for 50 years and never escalate.

Two shots doesn't seem excessive. If he drank to excess essentially every night I'd say he's likely an alcoholic.

That's just my opinion though.
