Why is my hearing so good right now? ?

I have a mystery on my hands..Ive had hearing problems since I was a kid, where I haven't been able to make out what people are saying. It was like I had way too much earwax in my ears, and nothing was getting through. The last month or so, my hearing has gotten so sharp that now the house is too quiet. No buzzing, no house sounds, just quiet. I can hear the stereo in my room clearly, and otherwise the house is too still. I can hear my breathing, I can hear the mice scratching around, everything. But the air is too still. There's no house sounds. Also, there's very little wax in my ears. It's hard to describe. Why is this happening now, and not before?

Update:

Maybe I've had an ear infection all this time and not known it?

Update 2:

My question should have been "could I have had an ear infection for years now and not known it?"
