Is death painful and scary, to dying people?

Imagining that you’re really old and you’re not dying in your sleep?

I'm not elderly but I have been very very very close to death. I saw the white light through my pain and it was comforting. My pain however was my illness which I imagine old people do not have to encounter as they are passing away. Is there pain? I imagine there is from whatever ails them not from the dying process.

I think if you aren't dying in your sleep it is.. for some deaths may be quick though that you will barely remember to feel. Instant. You won't have time to think, but imagine being on fire or boiling... very painful.
