What does "those given"  here mean? ?

the best Christmas gifts came not from the gift received, but from those given,

    which is right up there with the cheque's in the post

    The word "those" is referring back to the word "gifts" earlier in the sentence.

    It's saying that the best gifts are the ones given and not the ones received.

    You could say it like this ".....not from the gift received, but from those gifts that are given".

    Since we already know the subject of the sentence is "gifts", you only need to use the word "those" because the subject is understood.
