How to add two base 5 numbers?

43322 ₅  + 33444 ₅ 

 = 132321 ₅

Taking the right hand column add the '4' & '2' . This sums to '6' . One  more than '5'  ( 5 + 1 = 6) 

The '1' is the answer in the right hand  column. The '5' now becomes '1' in the second column. In the second column we have 2 4 & carried forward '1' . These sum to '7'  ( 5 + 2)  So the answer in the second column is '2' , and '5' converts to '1' in the third column . 

Continue like this .

Hence 

43322(5 ) + 33444(5) = 132321(5) 

NB When working in 'time' the base is '60' . 60 seconds = 1minute and 60 minutes = 1 hour.  Working in 'Base 5' is exactly the same, except you change up at a total of '5' .   

it's just like adding base 10 numbers.  start with one column at a time, beginning on the right.  when your total exceeds the base value, you add 1 to the next higher column and subtract the base value from your temporary total, writing down the left over portion in the correct place.  -- grampa

You add quite a bit like normal, but instead of carrying 1 when you get to 10, you carry 1 when you get to 5.  And, instead of making a 9 become 10 when you add 1, here a 4 becomes 10 when you add 1.  There are only 5 digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4.  So for example 4 + 3 which could be (4 +1) + 2, is 10 + 2 = 12

Add starting at the right like normal. 4 + 2 = (4 + 1) + 1 = 11 so a 1 is in the answer with a 1 carry. _ _ _ _ 1

Next you have 4 + 2 again, = 11 but a carry of 1 makes it 12. A 2 is in the answer, carry 1 again. _ _ _ 2 1

Next you have 4 + 3 = 4 + 1 + 2 = 12 bit carry 1 so 13. A 3 in the answer, carry 1

Next 3 + 3 = (3 + 2) + 1 = 11 carry 1 = 12. 2 in answer, carry the 1

_ 2 3 2 1

Finally 4 + 3, (4 + 1) + 2 = 12 carry 1 = 13 which finishes the answer
