the old Mississippi flag Incorporated the Confederate Battle Flag into it. That flag, has been extremely controversial for its racist associations. The Confederacy was formed explicitly to deny rights to African Americans and keep them as slaves. The Confederate flag was widely adopted as a southern symbol in the 1940s as if specific reaction to African Americans pushing for more civil rights. so a lot of people want to do away with the use of Confederate imagery, including the flag. The use of it in Mississippi, the state with the highest proportion of African-American residents, was particularly galling. I mean, can you imagine being a black politician in Mississippi and having to stand in front of a flag that contains a symbol of hatred towards you and your ancestors? Surprisingly, the decision to remove the flag was very non-controversial. The Mississippi legislature is dominated by Republicans and the vote to remove the old flag and Institute a new one was either unanimous or nearly unanimous

I don't like, love or worship flags. I care about humanity.
