Why is character count counted as word count in Microsoft Word?

    It's that specific software.

    From what I understand, character count is every typed character, except spaces.  Word count is exact, counting the character groups between spaces. 

    Tested: Word 2007, using the Word Count on the Review Tab.

    Typed "One two 3" in a word doc.  Characters: 7, Words: 3
