I am more optimistic about them now than any time in the past even when they made decent runs at the WC.  Their bench is deepest it's ever been.  Players which 10 years ago would have been starters are lucky to make camp today.  I think they will be strong this qualifying round and for Qatar in '22.  They will be even stronger in 2026 and not someone teams will want to face.

I think eventually they'll be competitive in both soccer and rugby union due to sheer numbers, the USA is a huge country, even with all the other sports they have to choose from, there'd still be plenty of talent left for soccer and rugby union.

Soccer in the United States is run by different organizations. The United States Soccer ... The highest-level men's professional soccer league in the U.S. is Major ... The women's national team has won four Women's World Cup titles and four gold ... Early soccer leagues in the U.S. mostly used the name "football", for example: ...

Probably not. There's too much competition for the best athletes from other sports.

They are currently ranked 22nd in the world. I don't think they would have much chance of qualifying for the world cup if they had to play European teams to qualify, instead of teams like Canada and Panama. Teams such as Holland and Portugal have never won the world cup, I don't see the USA winning it any time soon, if ever.

Yes. When America takes a sport seriously it does inevitably become good at it. The sheer resources it can throw at it and the numbers do make a difference overall. Basically kids need the time and the coaching, if the us can get the coaching right at youth level it should be competing for world cups. However this process takes time and while it will deliver long term success, short term you won't see much. Does the USA and modern western culture have the patience for that
