If a car dealer won’t let me use a code scanner to inspect a truck, should I take my business elsewhere ?

You mean you want to try to pull codes on a potential purchase?
Or you want to borrow their scanner to pull codes on a truck you own?

Yes. Other places won't allow you to use it either. They don't care if you walk.

I don't follow your question.
Are you trying to save the cost of a fee, in the repair process?
Or are you trying to verify that some codes that they are quoting, actually exist?
Or some other reason?
You have the right to have your own vehicle's computer scanned by the auto parts store (at no cost) or using your own scanner, but why wouldn't you do this first, before you brought the truck for service?
Maybe you're trying to buy a used truck from their used vehicle lot? Ask them to scan it for you for no extra cost, in your presence, before you buy.

They charge to pull codes at a car dealer. Go to an Advance Auto or Auto Zone parts store. They read codes for free. Write the codes down and post them here for help.

Of course. They obviously have something to hide. Of course you could have test driven it and plugged in around the corner.

I would walk away. They may be afraid of having the computer codes erased so they couldn't have it smogged for registration without putting it through the minimum drive cycle, wasting time and fuel. Your scanner would tell you good or bad about the engine. They should at least pull the codes for you if they have their own mechanic..

I would. It doesn't hurt the car to plug in a scanner and see if it has any codes stored.
