How did you fill out your W-4? Employers are required to deduct Social Security and Medicare...........if you filed Exempt. If you didn't, file Exempt, then the employer will deduct Social Security, Medicare, state and federal taxes.

It could be a mistake by your employer, or it could be your mistake, or it could be correct.
No federal tax is due if you earn less than $12,550 in a calendar year. Average with your spouse if you have one, and dependents and other tax-favorable events increase that limit.
How much your employer withholds is calculated from your income that pay period (at that rate how much would you earn all year) and information you provided about e.g. your marital status.
So you might have no federal tax withheld if you earned very little in that paycheck or if you filled out form W4 incorrectly.
Social security tax has no minimum income, and each state decides its own tax rules.
If you made a 401(k) contribution or other pre-tax deduction, that is ONLY exempt from federal tax. The other taxes still apply.

How could we answer that? You either don't make much money, OR you filled out your W4 form incorrectly so that no or little federal tax has been deducted. That's where you start--by asking to review your W4. Make sure you've filled it out correctly.

Social security must be deducted even if a person only makes $1. Federal is deducted only if they make more than an amount that depends on what they put on their W-4. So either you're not making enough or you filled out your W-4 wrong.

You may have filled out a form wrong?

Two possible reasons.
You might have made a mistake on your W-4 and marked that you are "exempt" from federal taxes. This option would only apply if you expect to make less that $12,500 for the year. If you have marked "exempt" on your W-4, then no federal taxes will e withheld.
Your pay might have been low enough that it didn't qualify to have taxes withheld.
