Is it better to not pay your fare when riding BART or muni?
Because fare evasion rarely results in a citation and even if you get one it's easier to pay a fine monthly or yearly than pay for a fare on every trip. If you are approached by a fare inspector you can just walk away and they can't stop you.

Pay it. These systems do not operate for free. They need to pay for its upkeep.
What can happen is if a certain station is seen as having a lot of fair jumpers, they can simply close the station permanently.
Another thing that can happen is to make it free and add the cost to your local sales tax.

There's a concept called the "social contract". This means that when people live in a way that provides the best to everyone, all are better off. When you steal from BART (which is what you're doing(, they then have to charge more to everyone else to cover your free rides. That means that other people are supporting you- why should they do that?

No it’s not. It’s morally bankrupt behavior, but that raises fees for everyone else to support the service.
