Was Continental a separate entity from Lincoln, and in what year was the first Lincoln Continental produced?

The 1956-57 Mark II was produced by a separate division of FoMoCo - Continental Division. The 1958 Mark III was just a more expensive Lincoln, but the title and ID tag still said Continental Division. Starting in 1959, the Mark IV was again a Lincoln Continental.
