Entropy hit the nail on the head. The guy is an homage/rip-off artist who can't think of a suitable ending to anything he's done. Everything is fan service with no substance and he's basically ruined everything he touches. The only aspect of Entropy's answer where I disagree is that I've never liked him!
Abrams shouldn't try to reboot other franchises, and he shouldn't concentrate on his own work either; he should be happy with the money he's earned and bow out of Hollywood (but we know that will never happen).
...at least we didn't get any lens-flare coming off of lightsabers.

Some people use their fame in Hollywood to get creative control of their projects and do "their own work".... Abrams seems to be one of those guys content to keep doing the same thing so long as the paychecks keep coming.
It's honestly not an unusual thing....corporate America is full of people who would rather be doing something else but have chosen the security of their jobs over the risks of "doing their own thing".

It would be nice to see a JJ Abrams original work, like LOST. I actually would like to see LOST continue in a spinoff and new series. The island's mysteries have only begun to be uncovered.

I agree with you, he should focus on making his own movies. But big companies keep hiring him and giving massive paychecks so he's not gonna say no. Maybe the new superman will flop and he'll stop getting us much attention.

I used to like JJ Abrams, but I've come to realize he's actually a tremendous hack. His TV series embraced sci fi and supernatural themes at a time when most didn't and it made me like him, even as I recognized his weaknesses vis a vis Mystery Boxes and his inability to finish ANYTHING.
But since he's moved into movies, I now see that he's FAR worse than I ever realized. He's got a strong sense of pop culture knowledge, and he loves giving people fan service, but his movies are BAD. They're just shallow repetitions and echoes.
