Is being chunked up full of morphine the most painless way to die?

Yes. Where I worked, we had orders to "titrate up for comfort" with no limit. Any tiny indication of pain, and the patient got more morphine ...and maybe a little ativan, too. Most were "sleeping" very deeply when they finally died.
It's practically euthanasia, although we don't call it that.
