Too many people are over reliant on fault codes: they often hide underlying real causes and are just a diagnostic tool which help a proper mechanic to work out what’s wrong. 

By “proper mechanic” I mean just that: NOT a parts fitter who may have many of the same mechanical skills but very few if any diagnostic skills.

This is one of those potentially tricky ones where it may even be worth booking the car in with a VW (or Audi/SEAT/Skoda) main dealer as they’ll have far more advanced model specific diagnostic machines and access to the full range of manufacturer TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins). If they diagnose the cause but you don’t want to pay them to carry out the repair, you just pay them for the work they’ve done and take the car plus the reports you paid for to another repair shop. Or return to the main dealer when you find that independent repair shops sometimes charge more than main dealers as some dealers operate fixed rate repair menus which can be cheaper than independent shops. They’ll also be using genuine VW group parts.

Get a scanner and read the trouble codes.
