Is the United Nations a waste of time?
Every year U.N. representatives gather every year to discuss the worlds problem. Then don't do anything about them.

Pretty much. Composed of a bunch of idiots that try to make themselves feel important.

The UN was envisioned as nothing more than a forum for nations to discuss their grievances out in the open. We don't own it. It is not part of the US State Dept or Defense Dept.
All the members of the UN, each one of them is individually sovereign--meaning the UN has no real power to force them to do anything. And though the UN does run a 'peacekeeping' service, they aren't a military power. The MOST they can do is send an offending nation a nasty letter.
The UN doesn't work well for us because we aren't able to use it properly. We ignore anything it tells US, but if it criticizes other countries we insist on seeing that as an authorization for us to invade them. That's just wrong.
It's not just us. Almost every country totally ignores UN guidance. But as a 'leader' in the world, we COULD at least set an example.

If they don't do anything then they're a waste of money, and if they try to do something, they're a bunch of meddling foreigners. If they can manage some humanitarian aid, and keep the world from going to war, then they've done about as good as they can.

In it's current format pretty much. But it could be a useful stepping stone to a more functional world body. The security council for example is a joke with the five permanent members being able to veto any motion. Why again do they get that right when other countries don't? That's a relic of WW2 and it has to go in order for the UN to be relevant in the 21st C.
