Can consumption of alcohol be harmful if you’re breast feeding ?

I’m too embarrassed to ask my OBGYN doctor about this and I’m certainly not going to ask our newborns pediatrician, however I was wondering if alcohol consumption can effect your child while breast feeding and would it be harmful?

It’s feels like a relief that I can finally drink again after being pregnant for what feels like forever but at the same time I don’t want to cause any harm to my baby.

Of course it is dangerous.  I raised three children, breasts fed each and NEVER had a sip of alcohol until the youngest began school.  A mother can ALWAYS reject alcohol but she can NOT reject her children.

If you're so irresponsible you don't know that drinking alcohol is not recommended while breast feeding, then maybe it's time to give your child up for adoption?

YES! It will affect the baby because it will affect the breast milk!

Remember~ if you are breast feeding, everything you are eating and drinking is what your baby will be eating and drinking. You put alcohol in your body and you put it in your baby's. If alcohol is bad for an adult, imagine what it will do to an infant.

When you want to have some alcohol, you should make sure you have a supply of pumped breast milk for the baby to have that will last for about 24 hours.  (this would be if you are planning on having several drinks or actually becoming drunk.)

You should NOT breast feed after drinking.

You CAN hurt the baby.  How much harm would depend on how much you drink.

ONE casual drink is usually considered "safe".  If you can wait for about two to three hours after one drink before feeding the baby, then it should be fine.  The alcohol level in your milk will be the same as whatever is in your bloodstream - so the more you drink - the higher it will go.

Yes it can but having one drink now and then is not going to do any damage.

Yes it’s harmful. You should never be embarrassed to ask your doctor questions about your child’s well-being.

EDIT: What kind of nut job actually goes and thumbs down every answer where people tell a mother not to nurse her infant while drinking? There’s some screwed up people in the world.

The first time my son slept through the night was when my wife had had some vodka. Not to be recommended, though!

You can't actually be that dense

Yeah, it's bad. If your child ends up showing alcohol in their system from it, you can expect social services to make your life a nightmare.
