When someone is setting up a trick shot in pool and are balancing the balls why do they tap on top of them first?

The trick shot is they balance a rack on a stack of two pool balls at each corner. Then strike a ball, the ball replaces the ball that is hit and leaves the stack of two balls and the rack untouched. Before they do that they tap on the top of the balls.

It helps to "set" the ball in the felt so that they don't shift.

Many trick shots depend on the balls about to be struck touching so that their paths once struck can be controlled.

If you simply lift the rack or release balls you have placed by hand, they could shift slightly due to the texture of the felt. Even a few millimeters variance in the balls' contact points can send them rolling on unintended paths.
