This is a perfect example of Republicans being "anti-big-government"- until big government suits their purposes. There have been Republican anti-Democrat conspiracy theories claiming Democrats want to put a chip in everyone- the latest example I'm aware of is the conspiracy theory that the covid vaccines have chips in them. So, for some reason, to Republicans, in some imaginary scenario it's diabolical that you can be identified, but in the case of voting, it's diabolical if you don't have identification even if the state has your name and address and that's how they identify on their voter lists- but it's only diabolical if you're likely to be a Democratic voter.

Donald Trump votes by mail; he's not presenting ID when he does that. But I assume Republicans think that's OK because he's a Republican; only people who are likely to be Democrats should have to ID themselves. Should Donald Trump be inconvenienced to go to the polls and identify himself and vote there, or is he special so special rules apply?

Then consider that this undoubtedly applies to millions of other wealthy Republican voters who don't require Secret Service bodyguards, etc., in other words, just an ordinary person as far as everyone is concerned when they're seen in public, so it would be no disruption for them to show up at a public polling place- you can bet, they're voting by mail as well, because they don't want to be bothered with showing up in person when they have other things they want to do.

So what justification is there for one set of rules for wealthy Republicans and another set of rules for people that wealthy Republicans view as likely Democrats? No justification that involves justice or fairness.

In short, I would say it's more an issue of discrimination on the basis of economic status and age. I didn't go into the age scenario, but basically what it involves is an elderly person who's still competent to vote but has no means to get to the polls and identify themselves.

An ID that you only use once every 2 or 4 years seems ridiculous, especially since you have to have ID to register to vote
