Fish like mammals and birds eat different things. Some are herbivores, others eat bugs and others eat meat. So to catch a fish you have to know what it eats or what it "strikes" at. Some fish are aggressive and territorial, getting them to think there is a threat or intruder will make them strike at something. Others have to be tricked into thinking it is something to eat.

Some fish are bottom dwellers and feeders. These take a different bait and fishing technique.

Fishing like hunting demands you know what it takes to get what you seek. There are books that address several different types of fish. Knowing when they feed and where are also important in catching a fish.
