I think he was distracted. Too many businesses. Don't forget that he won a cup championship in one of his final seasons. At the Chili Bowl, he said he was a dirt driver that had a day job of racing taxi-cabs. He might actually believe that.

He got old and his reflexes declined, also others got better.
