    They are shocked and appalled that he didn't approve of blessing gay unions. I guess they thought he had become a Methodist.

    It looks like you answered your own question.  They freaked out because they just realized the Pope is Catholic.  Are you possibly referring to his latest edict that homosexual "marriages" cannot be blessed in the Catholic Church?
