Is NHL participation in the 2022 Olympics in question because of the genocide and hostage crises?
Yes, the league can just say they have other priorities and leave it at that. I suppose that would be the best thing for the hostages.

It would be nice if they would show a little more balls than the NBA, and tell China to take a hike.
As opposed to that paragon of social justice activists LeBron James, who carries on endlessly about injustice in the U.S., but gladly banks his Nike/China money.
What a f***ing hypocrite.

NHL participation is in question because of the greed for money by owners and the Olympics taking place where it wont be Prime Time broadcasting.
Remember the NHL did not participate in the 2018 Olympics and were the events you referring to taking place then?
I would expect after 2 years of COVID interruption to NHL schedules, that players and NHL look forward to a full, unhurried regular NHL season in 2022. Not one with a Olympic break.

Not really. The players want to participate, and frankly the owners don't give a collective bit about the human rights issues in China. It's really these issues:
1) Insurance (what happens if a player gets hurt playing in the Olympics, and can the clubs recoup costs)
2) Who pays for travel to get the players to Beijing and back to North America
3) Will the NHL get media rights to show highlights of Olympic games that feature NHL players on their platforms?
4) How do you fit an Olympic break in a schedule that is already going to be compressed given that the previous season (this one) won't end until sometime in July just prior to the start of the Tokyo summer Olympics?
5) Will club personnel have access to their players (for medical treatment and other) during the Olympics?
Not saying the human rights issues aren't important, but the IOC don't care (they're similar to FIFA in that way). They went to Russia in 2014 despite the country's stance on GLBTQ+ citizens and their invasion in Ukraine. They went to Beijing in 2008 and are going back in 2022. They'd go to Saudi Arabia if that was the best bid they got.
