What can I do about medical transportation?

After abdominal surgery, I will likely not be allowed to drive for a while, especially home from the hospital. I am a senior and live alone with no close relatives or anyone I feel comfortable imposing on since the hospital is about 30 miles away. To hire a taxi would cost more than the procedure. I've dropped some strong hints to people I know, but so far, no one has stepped forward to volunteer transportation or has had an excuse. Any suggestions?

Update:

This is in the US - New York State. We used to have a local medi-van that operated out of the community center, but it stopped operating when COVID shut everything down. No idea when it will resume. Besides they don't do it for free - $30 for trips within 10 miles and $30 plus $10 for each 5 miles beyond that for out-of-town trips.

Update 2:

BTW - I don't have Medicaid, just non-advantage, original plan Medicare Part A, B & D.

If you are in the UK there are volunteer drivers for this. Your local GP or hospital will give you details.

A 30 mile taxi will probably cost about $85 (which is not more than the procedure, if you are having surgery).

An Uber or Lyft is probably in the $45 range.

If you are in the the USA have a medicare supplement plan, it might come with medical appointment transportation.

If none of those work, come right out and ask instead of dropping hints.
