Since more people are killed on our highways every year than by firearm activity, why don't we put the same requirements on buying a car as?

some people want to see on firearms:  sales must go through a licensed dealer; a federal government agency must approve every sale; loaning a vehicle without a background check and permission would be illegal; all vehicles would have to be registered even if never used on public roadways.  Wouldn't that make our highways safer as it will end gun violence?  Of course, criminals wouldn't be subject to any of these limits and restrictions.  Only law abiding taxpayers.

Update:

OTTO, in most states, carrying while intoxicated will get your CCW pulled - permanently.  A driving license is NOT required unless driving on public highways.  EVERY state that has "must issue" laws requires an applicant to undergo several hours of legal and safety training and prove proficiency prior to issuance.

Update 2:

David, ask your question on your own.  Answer mine here.  I'm not asking about knoves.

Update 3:

Registration and licensing are not required unless the vehicle is operated on public roads.

Let's make be realistic, Cars serve millions every day and accidental deaths are almost always accidental. Add up all the intentional deaths, murders by automobile.  Guns are used to kill more people than cars, by far

In a gun-free society children, businesses, and innocent bystanders, are always safer.  There are no drive by stabbings, or people killed by a stray knife. Average citizens can disarm a nut with a knife, but are often killed trying to disarm a nut with a gun.

Single shot hunting riffles are not the cause of our problems and aren't used by lone losers that kill dozens of people for no good reason.

The bottom line is Criminals need legal Gun owners. So they can buy, steal, or borrow those guns to commit crimes. So making lots of legal guns available leads to a lot of illegal use of guns.

The stupid part is owning a gun makes the owner more likely to kill their family, friends, and themselves.

Can you imagine dying only because you bought a gun to protect yourself from being killed by a gun ?

Having someone use your gun to kill you is poetic justice.

Modern public transportation would bring deaths to near zero.

Poor argument since vehicle ownership and operation is already regulated and requiring licensing, registrations, etc. and it varies by type of license for different types of vehicles.

Drivers must have passed a driver's test and have a driver's license. Their license can be revoked for DWI. So why not require gun owners to pass a gun test and be subject to having their gun license revoked if carrying a gun while intoxicated? Too many idiots are buying guns. People who don't even know that a gun is not a toy. People who have never been given safety training with firearms.

You need to pass a driving test - guns no test

You need to pay for plates and registration yearly - guns no annual fee

You need a license to drive a car which needs to be renewed - guns no such thing

You need liability insurance for a car - not a requirement for a gun

In 2019 about 320 people were killed by rifles in the USA, more than 1400 were killed by knives.  Should we ban the more dangerous knives?
