what does classical music usually signify in movies when played in the background?

e.g - when a film begins with classical music, what does this tell the viewers?

It doesn't signify anything, soundtracks are selected to set the mood of the scene,, usually at the whim of the director,, they could go with a classical piece, could be a jazz number, or a selection written specifically for the movie.
