How to become a teacher?

I have a masters degree in organic chemistry and have been working in the field for almost 20 years now. for about a year now I have felt the urge to go into teaching, as that was my original plan when I was in highschool. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this. Would i have to go to college for four more years? or just get a teaching license since I already have a masters degree?

Please dont spam me. I realize this will be a pay cut and I have marked this as anonymous so my current employer doesnt see this before I fully make up my mind.

I would advise you to re-consider. You have to deal with unruly kids and teenagers, bossy superiors, stern superintendents and hard to deal with principal. Also you need to handle parents' complaints and students' complaints.

And nowadays kids do not like to greet their teachers. My friend who is in teaching said that her students are heartless.

Out of 10 kids, 8 do not like chemistry. Many students dislike their chemistry teachers cos it is a tough subject to teach.

Do you want to mark assignments in the evening when other workers are out in restaurants enjoying their meals.

Please reconsider. There are rewards in teaching but nowadays classrooms have become so political.

My friend, who is a college professor, said he was so busy last few years in college.

If you can  handle all these, then go ahead and join teaching.

    Be forewarned.

Visit your state education website for licensing requirements.  Many states have an alternate route or fast track procedure of a few education courses to get you a provisional license.  At some point you need to student-teach with an observor.

Separately, consider getting qualified as a substitute teacher. Do some subbing with various age group kids.  Subs are basically baby-sitters, not doing "teaching", but this will give you a clue as to whether this is really for you.

Another thought:  you might want to teach at the community college level, which requires no licensing.

    Good luck.

the state board of teaching in your intended state controls teacher licensing, wich is vital for working in the public schools.  you'll have to look up the requirements -- check for a program wherein people like you who possess an advanced degree in specific subject matter can become certified teachers with minimal coursework.  -- private schools may have more relaxed requirements that will better suit your preparation, but you'll have to inquire of each type separately.  --  grampa

No, you don't have to go back for another degree. First, go to the Department of Education website for your state. Most states are so desperate for science teachers that they will hire you, and give you a few years to take a few education courses for licensure. OR apply to private schools, which can hire you without licensure. OR apply at community colleges, which hire mostly people with masters degrees. OR go back to school for a Ph.D. and apply to universities. You're in big demand- check out your options.
