Brushing can help PREVENT tartar (& worse = PLAQUE) but if there is already some, on the teeth, YOU either have to scale it off or get the vet to do a thorough teeth cleaning and then start brushing, just like YOUR dentist has to scrape stuff (attached to your teeth) OFF before doing a polish.
