Is an older car better?
I have a 2010 Chevy cobalt but I will be having my third child this year so this car will be too small. Thing is we can’t really afford another car note. Would it be better to buy a bigger car we could pay cash for or go ahead and get a car note??
For anyone who is going to anonymously chastise me for having another child in spite of my financial situation please save it. This was not planned and is not relevant to the question I’m asking. Thank you

What's more, it is an accepted fact that lighter sports cars tend to be better performers. While classic cars may be lighter and smaller than modern ones, most are still more durable and sturdier. Modern vehicles may be made to last longer, but they are generally disposable.

That would depend on how much a car of any sort would cost you and what your current income and expenses are. Also, is the Cobalt paid off or not.
As no one has any idea what those numbers are for you, no one here can even guess.
In general, a used car is cheaper to buy and pay off.

Fortunately, it will remain small for at least 12 years so lots of room in the car for them all. The car may be too small if they be big pigs....but right now they ain't So you have time. Most cars can hold 4 adults...even the SMART4TWO has that room or the Fiat 500. Always been that way. The only car that don't hold 4 is European sports cars(2) or BATMOBILE (2)

Used cars are ALWAYS a gamble which is the price you pay for being cheaper
ANY new car should easily go 5 years or more without major repairs and can easily go 10.
KIAs have a 10 year warranty

Buy a bigger car that you can get for cash. Borrowing money is never a good idea for anyone.

Get a used car from a reliable brand that you can afford.

If you can not afford the loan for a new car, then your only choice is to buy an older one,.....or make do with the Cobalt.
We do not know enough about the condition of your present car or you finances, or even the ages of your children. (16 year olds are different from 2 year olds).
In general, a good used car is a better deal than a new one, but there is a world of difference between a car from the mid 90's and one that is 2 years old.
If you can find a good used one, especially from a relative who loves you (and would not want to take advantage of you) and wants to downsize , that would probably be the best

Only you can go through your own finances, including income, debts, and spending habits, to know what you realistically can and cannot afford.
Financially speaking, an older vehicle makes more sense as it will depreciate less but owning an older vehicle generally means an increased risk for requiring more frequent, and more expensive, repairs. If you know what to look for when shopping for a used vehicle, you can mitigate some of that risk but you cannot completely eliminate it.
