Scotland was still independent in medieval times. And it never really fell. After Queen Elizabeth I died, James Stuart, King of Scotland inherited the crown of England. Even after that Scotland was still largely independent. It more or less voluntarily merged with England in the early 1700s. Would England in the 1700s have defeated the Roman Empire? Sure. Roman discipline and armor couldn't stop bullets and canon balls.

You do realise England lost the 100 years war and were defeated at Bannockburn. How on earth do you expect them to win against the Roman empire?
