What is the food like in prison?

I recently read of a case where a male prisoner died after putting on an extraordinary 140 kilos in 3 years. How is that possible?

I realize this is not in any way typical of prison anywhere but no further details were given other than that he became morbidly obese and could only walk with the aid of a stick. Even if I sat around 24/7 and did no exercise at all (which describes me perfectly) and ate pepperoni pizzas and ice-cream at every meal I cannot believe I would put on anywhere near that amount of weight. Perhaps the man had some medical condition but have you ever heard of such a thing happening in prison?

It's probably less the cafeteria food and more the junk the canteens are stocked with. This guy clearly has someone on the outside putting money into his junk food account.

I have a friend who had a lot of trouble in his life.  He's spent time both in local jails and state prison.  He tells me the food is a lot better in prison, and he figured it was because you're there longer.

I think he gained a little weight in prison, just from inaction, as you might expect.  But 140kg, that's ridiculous!  That man had some medical problem going on, I would bet.

I read a news story years ago about a woman who gained something like 75kg, all in her abdomen  (which must have made her look pretty funny!)  Finally she went to a doctor who found she had a 75kg tumor that had grown all through her abdomen.  If I remember right (it was decades ago) the operation to remove it took many hours because it had grown all between her intestines and other organs.

In the US we treat our prisoners very badly.  If a prisoner has a medical problem, it's not easy to see a doctor, so prisoners often die of diseases that are relatively easy to treat.
