What do they use the fingerprints for handgun permit for primarily?

Getting my prints Monday, but I've had prints for hazmat license, AND twic card at the same fingerprint place, why do they need them if they have them?

    All those fingerprint cards go to different databases for different purposes. 

    Many departments don't have cross checking of fingerprints until a crime has been committed or the Police/officials are checking up on you.

    Fingerprints taken for gun permits PLACE you on state law enforcement agency databases...
